This class will focus on increasing the amount of clay participants are able to throw on the wheel, no matter what amount they are currently comfortable throwing. Participants will be challenged to slowly increase the amount they throw with, making their hands stronger and refining their centering and pulling techniques as the class progresses. Participants will practice both throwing tall and throwing wide and will learn tips and tricks for both. Also discussed will be various functional applications of large thrown works across history and ways to utilize larger thrown items artistically.
This class is best suited to students comfortable with throwing at least three pounds on the wheel.
About Ursula:
Ursula Hudak began working with ceramics as a small child under the guidance of her mentor Marian Ferrer, and has spent her time since developing and deepening her practice. She has a degree in Art History from Oberlin College where she was co-president of their Pottery Co-op and taught an ExCo class in throwing large pieces on the wheel. She specializes in large thrown and/or coil-built works and production potting, and enjoys creating fine art works that incorporate ceramics and other mediums. When she’s not in the studio she works at the Roxbury Arts Group in Roxbury as their Creative Opportunities Coordinator. She really loves helping people expand their confidence with throwing and is always down to talk shop!
