Raku Workshop: Inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing, this Western-style raku involves removing pottery from a kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies and produces brilliant metallic blues, purples, coppers, reds, and yellows.
Participants will have the opportunity to fire up to 12 items, $10 per item. If you don't have bisqueware, don't worry! We will have a few pieces of bisqueware for walk-ins just in case. On the event day participants will choose to glaze their work with one of our four specialized Raku Glazes. Our Kiln is capable of firing works up to 16" tall and 12 inches wide.
Note: Raku ware is not food-safe. Due to the volatile nature of the Raku firing process, we cannot guarantee the safety of your work as cracking and breaking from thermal expansion and contraction can occur. Thicker work made with gorged clay may produce better results.
