Intermediate Wheel Work

This
class will focus on improving wheel technique, focusing on posture,
hand and finger position and process to mitigate the most common
problems in throwing. The goal of this class is to get students more
confident in the breadth of shapes and sizes they’re able to throw. We
will focus on centering and pulling techniques, throwing tall versus
throwing wide and tips and tricks for both, combining multiple thrown
segments into one piece, and how to make teapots and sets of plates,
bowls and mugs. We will also dedicate some class time to discussing
advanced trimming techniques and several decorative methods such as
Mishima, wax resist, water etching, carving, sgraffito, and burnishing. 

This class is best suited to students comfortable with throwing at least
three pounds on the wheel. Practice outside of class time is
recommended but not required.

About Ursula:

Ursula Hudak began working with ceramics under the guidance of her
mentor Marian Ferrer and has now been in the studio for over fifteen
years. She has a degree in Art History from Oberlin College where she
was co-president of their Pottery Co-op and taught multiple ExCo class
on throwing. She specializes in combined thrown and hand-built folk
works and production potting. When she’s not in the studio she works at
the Roxbury Arts Group in Roxbury as their Creative Opportunities
Coordinator. She really loves helping people expand their confidence
with throwing and is always down to talk shop!
